There are days you photograph that feel less like a job and more like stepping inside a dream someone else conjured — and then had the grace to invite you into. High above the Missouri River, where the rock bluffs meet the open sky and the rolling hills of Hermann stretch out like something from a storybook, Maddie & Ricky said forever. The air carried the sweetness of the valley below, the light fell golden and generous, and everything — every single thing — felt like it had been arranged by some invisible hand that understood what love looks like when it's completely, unquestionably real.
Maddie had envisioned a Cinderella wedding and Hermann Hill is the kind of place that doesn't try to be magical — it simply is. Perched on the palisades overlooking the mighty Missouri, it wraps you in a panorama that takes your breath away. Standing there with my camera, watching the couple come together against that river valley backdrop, I kept thinking: this is what it feels like when a love story finds exactly the right landscape to live in. The ceremony unfolded with the river as their witness. Sunlight scattered itself across the water far below, and the hills in the distance wore their softest green.
As the evening gathered and the sky began to burn with those legendary Hermann sunsets — tones of amber and rose gold spilling over the valley — I stole away with Maddie and Ricky from the dance floor for a few final frames. Just the two of them, and the river, and the last of the light with a symbolic and special heart locket. They closed the evening with me with a final staged send off, it was the perfect way to celebrate the ending coming to a close.
Maddie and Ricky — thank you for trusting me with something so sacred. Your love story is the kind that makes you believe in fairy tales all over again. Not the glittering, perfect-on-the-surface kind, but the ones written in quiet glances and steady hands and the particular tenderness of two people who have truly chosen each other.
